Chai sugar jars, a fun homemade gift!

Homemade food gift: chai sugar in jars

Weโ€™re making a gift! A gift for ourselves and some to share, too.

My chai obsession is prettyย well-documented at this point. I drink it hot dailyโ€“ yes, even in the summer. When given complete creative freedom on my next cookbook, it suddenly filled up with so many chai-flavored desserts that even I was embarrassed. (But only mildly).

But thereโ€™s one thing that didnโ€™t make the book: the jarsย of chai sugar that get made in my kitchen, stacked on my counter nearest the tea mugs, and sprinkled on almost everything.

I thought weโ€™d make a batch together, package it into little jars and give it as part of a gift basket, k?

(Remember when we made homemade caramels for gifts last year? And remember when we decided to keep making caramels until our fingers were so sticky we couldnโ€™t use our phones and apple cider caramels were our new obsession? Me, too.)

Ingredients for Chai Sugar Jars:

Youโ€™ll need loose-leaf tea for this, or you can cut open English black breakfast tea bags. The higher quality tea you have, the better this will be (obvs). The powdery stuff is, well, powdery, and I donโ€™t love it for this, but it will definitely work.

Black tea leaves + sugar + spices = CHAI TEA TIME SUGAR HAPPINESS.

I wanna say that the minimum spices you should use for this are: cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger. Cloves and allspice are nice if you have โ€™em, but fine if ya donโ€™t. I went to camp โ€˜the more spice the betterโ€™ when I was a kid, so I bump mine up probably too high.

What to sprinkle this on? How abouts fried sweet things (donuts cominโ€™ your way soon), the foam of a tea latte, sugar cookie dough balls, your tongue, anythingelseyoulike.

How I love you and your recipes!!โค๏ธ You have made our lives so much better with just enough cake for two and soโ€ฆmanyโ€ฆother meals. Thank you!!

  4. Lyndsay Patricia James says:

To make a drink with this mix do you just add hot water and milk??
Most chai teas I have one just adds water but I donโ€™t see any milk component in your mix.
Please are you able to elaborate as I love chai teas and they are not always available in the shops and
when they are, they can be expensive.
    Many thanks

Iโ€™m glad you asked this, Lyndsay! Itโ€™s really just for garnishing anything that would normally get sugarโ€ฆso, donuts from the fryer, sugar cookies, crepes, etc. Itโ€™s not really for mixing with water and making tea because it doesnโ€™t have powdered milk in it.

Would love to know the source for those incredible jars!

    Thank you in advance.
