But the last two times I made them, they collapsed as they cooled – what might cause that? Maybe my baking soda is old? The cookie balls seemed very soft as I put them on the sheet, but with melted better that seems right.

The taste is good but they don’t stay thick and I can’t for the life of me figure out what I did differently!

I’ve never made red velvet anything before so I wasn’t sure how they would turn out but they were delicious. I used regular ol’ liquid food coloring instead of gel, and just added a tiny bit extra to my dough, and they ended up being a super pretty dark red – they looked great. I made 12 cookies out of the dough instead of 6 to get smaller cookies and still used the same temp and cook time with no issues. Will definitely be keeping this recipe for future use!

Mine were red, some other folks may have been using food coloring instead of gel. Gel is very concentrated! I made 8 cookies with a Godiva chocolate heart. My granddaughter loved them, but WOW did they turn her teeth and mouth red for a couple of hours!

They fit perfect in my daughter’s Yumbox.

Any idea how much beet powder to use to get any semblance of red? Things tend to go pink with it… thanks.

I’ve made them 3 times in 4 days, and everyone loves them. I divided the first two batches into 8 total portions and made them as directed except without the white chocolate hearts. Sooooo good! The 3rd round, I divided the dough into 16 equal portions (15g each for those who are obsessive compulsive like myself), baked them for 7-8 minutes, just until the tops showed signs of cracking, then cooled them and sandwiched them with cream cheese frosting – OH MY! Thank you so much for a fantastic, scalable recipe that I’m sure I will make over and over, whether the occasion calls for a little or a lot.

Excited to try this recipe! If I used McCormick red food “coloring” how much would I need to use to achieve vibrant red (rather than muddy red)?

Hi Sarah (and thank you Christine for the recipe not to mention your entire website!)- I only just discovered this recipe and like you, I tripled it. As I incorporated the dry into the wet, I noticed the cookie dough was plenty ready with about 1/4c of the dry remaining; wondering if you recall if you did as well? No Reese white pb hearts up here in Canadaland but I did use some Hershey’s ‘cookies & cream’ kisses and they were adorable!

That’s very misleading. They look chocolate. ☹️

You totally can, but it won’t be as vibrant. Use the same amount :)

Is it okay if i will just use a liquid food coloring? Do you think it will affect the taste? If its okay how many liquid food coloring should i use? Thank you!

This is the best cookies recipe i’ve ever bake. It’s not too sweet, chewy inside and crispy outside. I added chocolate chip at the top of each and this is so yummy! This is also my parents’ fav.
Could I take cocoa powder out of the recipe to make simply sugar cookies? I want to make sugar cookies which still have texture like this red velvet cookies.
